Absolutely adorable book. It’s going to help so many children and adults learn the importance of white canes and their significance to the blind and deaf community!
Kristen has brought blindness and how children deal with it to the forefront! This book will open your eyes and minds to how children cope with every day life that people take for granted.
I am a mom to a visually impaired child and can TOTALLY RELATE to the parent aspect and just brings awareness to the blind community as a whole. There are so many lessons learned in the book. Really great to also introduce your own kiddos as to what the white cane is!!
I have been a Orientation and Mobility Specialist since 2015 and being able to have the book “Cane Kids” is a great resource to help my students, especially my younger ones. Some of my students are reluctant to use a cane because they feel different, but this helps them understand the importance of using a cane, and there are others just like them who need it. This book is not just for individuals who need a mobility cane, it is to help their, classmates/peers to learn why they use it.
The author Kristen-Lang takes readers on a journey through two children who use mobility canes and how it helps them to be independent and navigate the world with strength and grace despite facing significant challenges. Kristen Identified that this is need for not just children who are visually impaired but for everyone to understand a mobility cane user.
“Cane Kids” should be in every library in schools to help all to become aware mobility cane users and for individuals who are blind or have an visual impairment.
A beautiful telling of two kids navigating life, their way. I learned so much from reading and listing to the audio version, this may be a children’s book, but adults will learn a ton too!
Kristen Lang has been my daughter’s O&M therapist for 4 years. She’s given her confidence and learned independence. My daughter has a visual impairment called CVI.
Cane Kids will empower and educate kids and adults alike, it gives a voice to an often overlooked or misunderstood disability. It is also accessible to all readers!
It is a much needed resource that explains how kids with blindness or low vision use their white canes. It helps them become independent and safe while navigating the world. It can also help them feel seen and understood.
So thrilled that Mrs. Lang has used her knowledge and compassion to help spread awareness about white canes and vision impairments !
WOW WOW WOW!!! As an Orientation and Mobility instructor, I have been in search of a great book to help my students and their peers learn about the white cane. The two characters take on many challenges that mirror similar situations my students have been in. “Cane kids” really helps the reader understand why the cane is important and that there are other kids out there who utilize a white cane as well! This book should be available in ALL school and libraries!! Praise to the author Kristen Lang for providing us with such a beautiful and fun resource!
I love this book by Kristen Lang. The story of the Cane Kids, Everett and Willow, provides such a positive and inspiring message of possibility and independence for the blind community and serves to educate those who are sighted as well to understand the experience of a blind person’s daily life. I especially liked the detailed description in the audio version of the book.
Beautifully written and gave me insight to how children with seeing impairment deal with every day life.
I absolutely loved this book. Cane Kids” is a five-star gem in children’s literature. Lang’s story about Everett and Willow navigating legal blindness is both heartwarming and inspiring, teaching readers empathy and resilience. What makes this book truly exceptional is its ability to educate and inspire simultaneously. Lang’s sincere message of facing life’s obstacles with determination shines through every page, making this a compelling read for both children and adults.
This book is exactly what the world needed! As a mom of a child who has Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) and uses a white cane himself, it is so important for our son to have heroes that face similar challenges as him. Everett and Willow are true inspirations and send a very powerful message to the reader. The author, Kristen Lang, has been our son’s O&M therapist for a few years, and her true understanding, compassion and desire to bring awareness to those navigating visual impairment and blindness radiates through this book.
