AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETING SERVICES

WHAT IS AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETING?

An American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter is a professional who facilitates communication between individuals who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or DeafBlind and those who can hear and speak. ASL interpreters use American Sign Language, a visual-gestural language used by many Deaf individuals in the United States and parts of Canada, to convey spoken language and cultural nuances. Their primary role is to ensure that Deaf or hard of hearing individuals have equal access to information and can participate fully in various settings.

ASL interpreters must be highly skilled in both American Sign Language and the spoken language(s) they are interpreting, and they should have a strong understanding of Deaf culture. They work to maintain a professional code of ethics, which includes confidentiality and impartiality, and they play a crucial role in breaking down communication barriers, facilitating information exchange, and promoting inclusivity for Deaf individuals.
